Fashion Friday: Lace+Stripes

My favorite neutral is probably grey. To me, it’s a little happier than black but still goes with just about anything. I love dark greys, but certain shades of light grey are really pretty too.

When I got this scarf at ALDO over the weekend (hail yes to Memorial Day sales!), I was already planning on what I’d wear it with. I love scarves, but I don’t have nearly enough (I think I have 6 now). And they’re certainly not a fall/winter staple only. Oh no. I love lightweight scarves in summer too. What I love about this one is it’s infinity (my favorite kind) AND it’s got three different striped patterns, making it totally versatile. And it’s grey/white too, so it basically works with anything.

Scarf love.

I decided to pair it with more grey, and offset it with one of my favorite pairs of colored shorts. I have a serious addiction to colored twill shorts. I own way too many to count (most from Hollister/Abercrombie) and I will never have enough. And they’re totally work-appropriate…well, at least in my workplace. Believe it or not, I’m one of the dressiest people there, aside from the anchors/reporters who HAVE to dress business casual when they’re on-air. For me, I could roll in wearing running shorts, a t-shirt and a baseball hat, especially since I work mornings, but I don’t. The outfit above is more my style. And the shorts are a little short, but since they’re looser-fitting and a dark color, they look pulled together.

I pulled the look together with my signature rings, and my knockoff Sperry’s (scored for under $20 at Payless!) instead of my usual fancy sandals. Perfect for a (casual) work environment or a day spent shopping at the mall. Totally up to you. But if I were you, I’d so choose shopping over work 😉

Side note: anyone guess what time these photos were taken? 3 AM on Wednesday morning. My great bathroom lighting fooled ya! Also, promise I’m not a freak who wakes up at 3 to take outfit pics. I’m just a freak who works from 3:30-11:30 AM!

What kind of clothes do you wear to work?

Spring Break Fashion

As spring break comes to a close for me (with some snow to end out the week, how perfect…not!), I’m trying to gear back up for 8 more weeks of the semester, picking classes for my senior year of college (scary how fast time flies) and planning out my summer. Not so much fun stuff to look forward to, but I am looking forward to spring and summer like weather, so I can finally wear all the clothes I splurged on over spring break!

Aqua sandals (Target).

Aqua sandals (Target).

I have a new-found obsession with Target’s shoe section. I love wandering the aisles to find amazing deals on shoes, and I’ve scored some pretty good ones. I got a pair of gold sparkly loafers last month for $6! They’re not the comfiest or most practical shoes, but they’re cute and definitely worth their low price. These sandals were also a steal at $12, but I’ll be getting a ton of use out of them this summer. The color is my favorite part, and now I want to go back and stock up on these in all the other colors too.

I’m always in need of another good pair of jeans, especially jeggings. I used to HATE tight pants with a passion, because I was so self-conscious about my thighs, but now I’m embracing the skinnier jeans. This new light wash pair was on sale at Hollister (love!) and the shade will be perfect for spring. I love the subtle print they have too.

Coral twill shorts (Hollister).

I have a problem with colored shorts. I just can’t stop buying them! I currently own a khaki pair, a navy pair, a burgundy pair, a bright pink pair, a blue plaid pair, a red plaid pair, a brown pair, a bright red pair and a dark grey pair. These coral ones are the perfect addition to my closet–I love anything coral and it’ll look great as a pop of color with a more neutral top.

Another aqua piece to add to my closet! I actually don’t own much in aqua, but I think this will be my go-to shade this spring and summer. It just makes me happy! This sweater will work well even into summer because it’s lightweight and cropped.

This outfit is very unlike my usual style, or at least my style from a year ago, but I love adding unexpected pieces like this to my wardrobe to mix things up. I’m normally not a fan of black but when it’s paired with a tribal-inspired black-and-white print, it’s so chic. I feel totally fierce in this outfit and I’m really excited to wear it for the first time!

What’s your latest clothing purchase? Do you like bright colors for spring and summer?

Friday Faves (June 8th)

Is it just me or did this week go by super fast? I guess staying busy will do that to you–I’ve been going to my internship, grocery shopping and packing for an upcoming move. I’ve barely had time to whip up any recipes lately so sorry for the lack of them this week!

Favorite Find: Fruit Infusion Pitcher

Who wouldn’t want fruit infused water?

I saw this baby at Target–aka, the store I could spend hours in looking at all of their stuff, especially their kitchen and patio stuff. This pitcher is really cool because you just put fruit in the inner cylinder and it infuses the plain water with it. So basically like juice but without the added sugar. How cool is that?!

Favorite Video: S*** Vegans Say

I’m sure you’ve all heard of the S*** ________ Say video series. This one and it’s sequel are flipping hilarious because I have definitely said some of those things before. Even if you aren’t vegan, you’ll probably find it funny because a lot of the stuff mentioned is pretty popular around the blog world. And maybe you’ve even said some of those things before yourself 😛

Favorite Breakfast

Chilled quinoa mixed with u/s vanilla almond milk and vanilla stevia, topped with peanut flour, raisins, sunflower seeds almond peanut cashew butter, chocolate chips and drizzle honey vanilla agave.

Move over, overnight oats! Overnight quinoa is where it’s at. When I first made this, I was worried it would turn out weird. But it’s actually really really good and a nice change from oats. The toppings are what make it, though!

Favorite Buy: Harbor Beach pinstriped skirt from Hollister

Mine is actually orange-striped, but you get the idea.

For such a girly girl, you’d think I’d own more skirts. I actually only have 6, not including my latest purchase. I love this one though because it has a summery, nautical feel and it feels fun to twirl around in. Yes, I am 5 years old, apparently.

What breakfast are you loving lately? What’s the best thing you’ve ever found at Target?

Style Phile: Prints Charming

I am not the kind of girl who’s content with tons of solids and basics in my wardrobe–no, I need a lot of variety. Unfortunately, until recently, it was pretty nonexistent, at least in the patterns department. If you took a look in my walk-in closet at the beginning of the summer, you would have see tons of colors in several shades; a variety of dresses, miniskirts, a few pairs of shorts, plenty of tops; but mostly all florals. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some florals but really? A whole closet full of them is a bit much. And I know that it’s a classic pattern, each floral is different, blah blah blah but I really needed some more prints and patterns in my life.

Enter my two three big hauls this summer. The first one gave me yet another floral piece (but it was a romper–which I’ve never owned before–in a brand new shade, so it wasn’t all bad) but also a very cute, breezy lime green-striped off-shoulder tee. I love how bold it is, and I was in desperate need of stripes.

The second one, just three weeks ago, brought me even more variety in the form of solids (also something I needed, despite saying that I’m not one for solids–they are a necessity, however). But I hit the jackpot on my most recent one just a week ago. I got lace (!), more stripes and plaid. Okay, a little floral slipped in there, too, but what can I say, I’m a creature of habit.

Three months ago, if you had offered me a striped sweater, I would have flat-out turned you down. No thanks, I’m not a stripes girl. However, I’ve learned the error of my ways. Stripes, if done the right way, are totally flattering, and cute in a chic nautical way.

I thought the angle of this was cool haha. Beach Street knit layer in blue stripe (Hollister, $20)

Despite my affinity for all things girly, I doubt if I would have bought a lace piece back in May. Now I have a beautiful yet simple dark grey lace-front tee and I love it.

I owned some plaid prior to last week’s shopping trip, but I’ve been itching to get some more since last fall. I did buy a couple pairs of plaid twill shorts in the spring, but since summer’s winding down, I was in desperate need of pieces that could work double-duty, right now and this fall. I found it in a royal blue plaid button-down that’s perfectly rugged yet still polished.

Now that I know how much difference a variety of prints can make, I will never give in to buying florals again. Okay, maybe just this once…

What is your favorite print or pattern?

Shopping and Gelato

Shopping is officially one of my favorite things to do. I’m a total girly girl, so I of course love clothes shopping, but I also love to go food shopping too (especially at Whole Foods 😀 ). Despite my love of shopping, there is one thing that makes it even better…gelato!

Yesterday, my mom, little sister (she’s 15 and btw, looks older than me!) and I headed up to Denver to hit up our favorite mall for all the Memorial Day weekend sales. I have to admit that I’m not the “smartest” shopper–I don’t usually seek out the clearance section unless I love something there. But with storewide sales, I can buy a newly introduced item at a clearance price. And I’m so down for that!

I was the only one planning on buying anything, but my mom did end up getting a few things herself. My sister basically tagged along for some window shopping and since she loves the same stores as I do, she was able to find a few things she might get for herself in the future.

I got 5 very cute items for a lot less than they would normally be. If they were all full price, I probably would have spent over $100 (which I didn’t have!) As it was, I spent most of my money but I’m happy with my purchases. At Hollister (prob my favorite store), I got an adorable red floral romper, a pair of khaki twill shorts and a pair of coral flip-flops. I’ve wanted a romper since last summer, but I’ve always been worried what people would think of me in one. It was only $20 and with an extra 30% off my entire purchase, everything ended up costing only $35! I think I’ll really love the romper as an alternative to a summer dress. I love me some dresses, but I need to switch it up every once in awhile.

Rompin' around 😉

I also went to American Eagle, Abercrombie Kids and A&F. I ended up buying an oversized lime green striped top from AE (I love how cute and breezy it is) and a pair of denim shorts from Abercrombie Kids. I love A&F, but it’s pretty expensive and by the time we ended up there, I had spent almost all of my money! So just some window shopping for me.

After our afternoon of shopping, my mom took us to Gelazzi, this  AMAZING gelato place in Denver (and in the city where I go to school). They have soooooo many flavors and they all sound so good that it takes awhile to decide! I went with half soy chocolate (favorite flava!) and half birthday cake. It was delicious and so creamy. Seriously, if you have never tried gelato, you are missing out. It is a million times better than ice cream or even froyo. Sure, I love froyo but gelato is just too good to pass up!

I know you want some....

Q’s: How was your weekend? Bought anything (food, clothes, etc.) lately?
